Good Friday Service of Tenebrae

Saint Catwg's Church Llangattock

Friday 3rd April at 2:00pm

Who could be better placed to write music for the passion and penitence of Holy Week than the composer Gesualdo?

Famed for the double murder of his wife and her lover, his music is equally dramatic, employing some astonishing harmonic experimentation and expressive mannerisms.

Gesualdo's Tenebrae Responsories of 1611 are his great masterpiece in which the pathos of the passion story finds its perfect match in the tortured soul of the composer.

His settings are packed full of moving details, harmonic twists and striking melodic outbursts that make for a compelling aural experience. No composer has captured the darkness and solemnity of these texts with such directness.

A rare treat!
