Service of Compline

St. Cenau’s Church, Llangenny

Saturday 9th March at 4:30pm

As part of the Crickhowell Walking Festival, the Unicorn Singers are embarking on a weekend of Renaissance singing in historic churches.

Saturday March 9th, 4.30pm at Llangenny and Sunday 10th March 4.30pm at Tretower. Admission free.

At Llangenny (north of the A40 from Glangrywney) they sing the beautiful contemplative service of Compline to settings by Tallis just as it may have been heard in pre reformation times. Tallis's music wonderfully captures the meditative mood of the liturgy in pieces such as In Manus Tuas, In Pace, and Te Lucis Ante Terminum. The closing antiphon Libera nos by John Sheppard is another must-hear renaissance gem. The Nunc Dimittis setting, however, is from the pen of local composer Huw Morgan, whose substantial output is becoming better known in the field of choral music.

At Tretower Church (next door to the historic castle) there will be another specially recreated service with the music of Tallis, but featuring this time the post reformation liturgy of Evensong.

Music will include Tallis's Dorian setting of the Canticles and responses.

These events form part of a walking pilgrimage through the St.Catwg Ministry Area.
